Peggy Orenstein fears that Skype will rob relationships of the intimate quality afforded by traditional means of communication. This need not be the case. Our daughter attends college in a remote area where cellphone service is unavailable. With Skype we enjoy real-time communication that is no more invasive than a phone call and far more satisfying than e-mail. I have not abandoned note-writing, e-mailing or telephone chats with friends and family. I simply choose which mode suits the occasion. I text my teenage son to come downstairs for dinner, since that seems to work best. Then we sit around the kitchen table and talk.
